PE

At GPA we aim to promote a high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in both competitive and non-competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.

TWO00465-v2

Intent

Our vision is to provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Implementation

Key Stage 2 pupils are taught to:

  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
  • Pupils will attend swimming lessons in year 5

Impact

A broad and balanced PE curriculum is delivered to provide the best opportunity for all pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles. Within Key Stage 2 all pupils receive at least one lesson per week with a specialist physical education teacher. This enables subject specific expertise in developing motor skills together with a progressive introduction for pupils into competitive sports.  Opportunity to participate and compete is evident throughout the curriculum.
