  • Great Park Academy Awarded “Climate Friendly School” Status

Great Park Academy has proudly achieved Climate Friendly School status, recognising its whole-school commitment to sustainability and climate action. The award was coordinated by the environmental education charity OASES and fully funded by the North East Combined Authority.

The announcement was shared over the summer, following months of dedicated work by pupils and staff alike. From assemblies and tutor time activities to KS2 super-learning days and staff meetings, the entire school community played a role in embedding climate-conscious practices into daily life.

A standout contribution came from the school’s eco-club, whose members took the lead on several key initiatives. Their enthusiasm and leadership helped drive the school’s efforts forward and inspired wider participation.

To earn the award, Great Park Academy selected and enacted 10 climate-friendly actions, demonstrating a practical and measurable commitment to sustainability. These actions were chosen to reflect the school’s values and to empower students to make a real difference in their environment.

“We’re incredibly proud of this achievement,” said Katherine Billingsley, our Head of School, “It reflects the passion and teamwork of our pupils and staff, and our shared commitment to building a greener future.”

The award is a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing sustainability journey and sets a strong example for other schools across the region.
