Intent

At Great Park Academy, we aim to bring mathematics to life in a highly engaging environment where all children can flourish. We support all our students to become confident, independent mathematicians with a deep understanding of mathematics, enabling them to confidently communicate ideas.

Deepening mathematical skills and understanding requires grappling and making mistakes; we create a positive classroom environment where all students are supported to take chances.

We have an ambitious and challenging curriculum, which enables every child to make progress and be successful in mathematics regardless of their starting point.

Our high expectations, multiplied by our students' aspirations, result in pupils passionate about their mathematical progress and its value to their educational journeys and careers.

Implementation

We have sequenced our KS3 maths curriculum to build upon prior learning at KS2, providing opportunities for students to make connections between different mathematical ideas. We have split the national curriculum into eight strands. The sequence of these strands are as follows:

  • Place value
  • Four operations
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Ratio and proportion
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

We use a range of teaching strategies and approaches to engage and motivate all learners. Lessons are planned to challenge all

students within our setting; different activities are incorporated within these sessions to meet the needs of all individuals.

Regular use of formative and summative assessment is used to monitor students' progress and inform teaching. Feedback, both oral and written, helps students understand their mistakes, improve their understanding, and make progress.

Impact

Students make excellent progress and feel confident with their mathematical abilities. They are resilient and exhibit high levels of engagement, participation, and independence in mathematical activities.

At each stage of learning, students build upon their prior knowledge, demonstrating a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.

Our 2023 KS2 results show that 92% of students were working at age-related expectations, compared to 73% nationally.
